Artificial intelligence applied to food exports

Exporting better is worth more than exporting more.

NICA Insights supports decision-making by evaluating the return and risk of each exporter's plan. It shows which combination of market, window, variety and buyer pays the most and carries the least risk with the same exported volume.

+8.1%

expected average increase in revenue, with the same exported volume.

average 8.1% 2.3% measured range 15.1%

Problem size

USD 2,604 M a year

that exporters in the region fail to bill or spend on deciding, excluding banana exports.

Market surveyed

3,132 exporters

with sales above USD 1 M in eight Latin American countries, adding up to USD 31,519 M FOB.

Track record

20 years

of experience applying our NICA model.

The problem

The largest loss never shows up on the balance sheet

Every export plan combines destination, window, buyer, size grade and logistics, and it is decided in 9 to 11 days with fragmented information. What goes unbilled because market conditions were not seized is never recorded as a loss on any balance sheet.

The opportunity

An empty space between the data and the decision

Today's offer sells prices and customs statistics, sector reports and general-purpose AI tools. However, the largest loss of value we identified is neither productive nor technological but decisional, and none of those offers helps to capture it.

The solution

A tool for risk analysis and commercial evaluation

It builds on our econometric model, validated over more than twenty years of application. The decision remains the exporter's, and NICA Insights works alongside them.

  • Health index

Rates the return and risk of the commercial plan in a single index.

  • Simulation

Simulates market, window and buyer alternatives before the season is committed.

  • Real time

Reads the season's information as it arrives, with alerts and recommendations.

  • From 10 days to 1

Cuts the time of each commercial decision from ten days to one.

Validated in Latin America

Benchmark case: ten years of Chilean walnuts

We audited, shipment by shipment, the 10 largest exporters of in-shell walnuts and the 10 largest of walnut kernels, which account for 60% of the sector's revenue, and our model shows that in 2025 they left USD 25.2 M uncaptured.

Unlike the benchmark case, which spans ten years, a regional analysis of 62 leading exporters in Mexico, Peru, Chile and Argentina, based on 2025 data only, showed that the same gap exists in other foods.

  • Grapes
  • Apples
  • Pears
  • Blueberries
  • Avocados
  • Mangoes
  • Mandarins
  • Tomatoes
  • Asparagus

The gap between the price each exporter gets and the price it could obtain depends on decision-making.
